Bulk Foods Recipe: Bin #1639 - SPLIT YELLOW PEAS

Recipe Ingredients:

  • 1 pound (16 oz) yellow split peas
  • 2 quarts (8 cups) water
  • 3/4 pound Polish sausage, cut in large chunks
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1 cup chopped celery
  • 1 cup chopped carrots
  • 1 ham hock
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed marjoram
  • 1 crushed red chili pepper or 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes, to taste

Recipe Instructions:

Wash and rinse peas. Place peas in a pot with water; bring to boil for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and let sit for 1 hour.

Add ham, garlic salt, onion, marjoram and red chili pepper; bring to boil and add bay leaves. Reduce heat; simmer covered for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.

Remove ham bone and cut meat into bite-size pieces.

Put meat, celery, sausage chuncks and carrots into soup; simmer over low heat for one hour.
